Sergeant Bill
Sergeant Bill, Goat Mascot, 5th Battalion, Canadian Forces
- Billy was a pet of five year old Daisy Curwain, daughter of a jeweller
in Broadview, Saskatchewan.
- Enlisted at Broadview with the Fighting Fifth Battalion, Western Cavalry
volunteers on August 19, 1914.
- Went by train to Valcartier, Quebec and by S. S. Lapland to England.
- Entered the trenches near Armentiers.
- Gassed during Seconded Battle of Ypres. Wounded by Shrapnel at
Festhubert. Suffered from shell shock and trench feet.
- Survived war which ended at 11:30, November 11, 1918.
- He returned to England in 1919, Sailed for home, and arrived in Regina by train
on April 24, 1919.
- Date of death is uncertain. He was mounted and placed in the Legislative Library
where he remained for many years. After a stay in the Plains Museum, Regina,
he returned to the Broadview Museum in 1980.
